AbstractThe presence of oscillations with periods of planetary waves in the ionospheric parameters has been associated with mesosphere-ionosphere coupling. Ionospheric GPS-TEC data modulation by planetary oscillations with two-day wave period have been investigated over Brazil, during January-February 2014. Geomagnetic field measurements by magnetometers and winds from meteor radar were used to identify planetary wave type variations in the electric current system of the E and upper mesosphere regions. The spectra shown energy for 2-day period in the TEC residuals, relative scale coefficient obtained from geomagnetic field and for meteor winds over 23° S, suggests a connection between the MLT 2-day wave and the 2-day variability in the E and F regions. The presence of the quasi 2-day oscillations in F region cannot be explained by non-linear interactions involving wave modes from below. Therefore, the presence of quasi 2-day oscillation in the TEC parameter are interpreted as due direct 2-day wave propagation from MLT region, which modulate the winds and electric field in E region which, in turn, is transmitted by magnetic field lines into F region to modulate the vertical drift, and thus print an oscillation with period of quasi 2-day in electron density, that have been observed in TEC data.
